Residential Treatment for NPD
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) can affect every aspect of a person’s life. It creates stress, anxiety, unresolved anger, and other negative emotions that cause frequent interpersonal conflicts and lead to additional mental health problems. While personality disorders can be difficult to treat, the gender-specific recovery program at Helix can help women with narcissistic personality disorder change their attitudes, behaviors, and fortunes, letting them heal in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a deep-seated coping mechanism that hides much inner pain. That pain is often related to trauma and neglect in childhood, which may be reinforced by more trauma later in life.
When trauma leads to NPD, intensive treatment programs can have a profoundly positive impact. Gender-specific residential treatment for NPD at Helix Treatment Centers features targeted, expert intervention by highly-trained psychotherapists and other medical professionals, plus total immersion in a caring, healing-centered environment where everyone is helpful, encouraging, and supportive.
Treatment for Narcissistic Personality Disorder at Helix
It can take many years before narcissistic personality disorder is diagnosed. Men comprise more than 60 percent of all cases of NPD, making it easier to overlook the disorder in women.
Some of the primary characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder include:
- Excessive self-pride and boastfulness
- Having an exaggerated sense of self-worth or overestimating personal accomplishments
- A lack of empathy, or inability to see things from the perspective of others
- Refusal to accept blame or take responsibility for life’s difficulties
- Extreme sensitivity to criticism
- Being envious of, or feeling threatened by, the success of others
- Manipulative behavior, using others without regard for their feelings
There are genetic factors involved in NPD. But it largely arises from encounters with abusive parenting, or from parenting behavior that veers from harsh to overly indulgent.
Narcissistic traits usually interfere with relationships and can make it difficult to sustain success in any area of life. Even if the narcissistic person is successful, as judged by normal standards, they are still generally lonely and unhappy.
But once NPD is recognized and officially diagnosed, there is real hope for change. Women with narcissistic personality disorder can learn to modify their actions, change their way of thinking, and begin to connect more deeply with others, if they receive compassionate care in a setting that offers guidance, support, and acceptance. Women who come to residential treatment for narcissistic personality disorder at Helix can do so with hope and optimism, as our treatment programs have produced excellent results time and time again.
Why Choose Helix Treatment Centers for NPD Treatment
At Helix Treatment Centers, staff and residents work together to create a friendly, close-knit, intimate environment where women with mental health issues can heal naturally and at their own pace. Helix therapists, psychiatrists, and affiliated medical professionals provide expert care services lightened with empathy and compassion, making the transition to full-time residential treatment smooth and painless.
Women-centered recovery programs are ideal for those who have narcissistic personality disorders, especially if co-occurring disorders have been diagnosed—as they often are when a personality disorder is present. Immersive treatment experiences featuring affirmative social interactions and frequent intensive therapy sessions fill the daily menu at Helix, along with specialized instruction that can boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and introduce women to a healthier overall lifestyle.
Individual therapy sessions with a lead counselor who specializes in treating NPD will form the core of your recovery experience, with group and family therapy offered on a regular basis as well. All issues past and present that have contributed to the development of your disorder will be explored, to help you gain greater self-awareness and self-understanding. If medications are required for any co-occurring disorders, they will be administered carefully and only in combination with regular therapy.
Some of the evidence-based treatments that may be included in your NPD recovery regimen include:
Somatic experiencing is an integrative therapy that recognizes how trauma and other issues are expressed both physically and psychologically. It has been proven in studies to be effective for treating PTSD but can also benefit women struggling with a range of painful memories and mental illnesses. By focusing on physical sensations, you will learn how to manage and process trauma.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT will help you become more aware of the negative and inaccurate thoughts and emotions that prevent you from healing. A trained therapist will show you strategies for changing problematic thinking so that you can react more positively to difficult situations, painful memories, and other issues.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is used to manage and process traumatic experiences. It is a way of helping the brain heal and reframe trauma. In EMDR, you will be guided to remember your trauma in a safe setting and with a compassionate therapist. Using eye movements, you will begin to remove the mental blocks that have prevented you from healing from those experiences.
Mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment: breathing, physical sensations, thoughts and emotions, and the world around you. It can take the form of therapy but also meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and other practices you can use later to calm and center yourself.
Healthy, balanced relationships are essential for good mental health. Many women come to treatment with relationship difficulties underlying trauma and mental illness. Relational psychotherapy can be one-on-one or with a loved one. It will help you learn and change your negative patterns in relating to other people, how to communicate effectively, and how to enjoy healthier, mutually beneficial relationships.
In addition to these primary treatment modalities, Helix also offers an extensive list of supplementary treatments. These can be used as needed to provide each resident with a unique, individualized experience for healing and wellness:

What to Expect the First Day
Your first day in recovery at Helix will help prepare you for the journey to come. You may feel some nervousness or trepidation initially, and may be concerned that you’ll be judged harshly by other women at the facility because of your diagnosis. But you’ll quickly discover that these concerns are unfounded. Everyone at Helix will treat you with kindness and respect, as residents and treatment professionals alike acknowledge and honor the courage you’ve displayed by admitting your problem and deciding to do something about it.
Intake and admissions procedures will take only a brief time to complete, thanks to the assistance you’ll receive from our helpful Helix staff. Once all paperwork is finished and your initial questions have been answered, you’ll be taken to your room and given a chance to unpack and settle in. There are only six beds in total at Helix, and each room is completely furnished and supplied with everything you’ll need to live comfortably during your time in residential treatment.
After you’ve had some time to relax, you’ll be given the opportunity to tour the facility. Your first meetings with treatment professionals and fellow residents will take place at this time, and during these initial interactions you’ll likely be impressed by the positive attitude that prevails among everyone.
There is a real feeling of community at Helix. The bonds you create with the members of your multidisciplinary treatment team, and with other women in treatment, will give you strength and inspiration to continue striving for a new and better life.
While formal treatment won’t begin on the first day, within 24 hours after your arrival you’ll be fully evaluated by a mental health professional. This is a necessary step to make sure your diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (and any co-occurring conditions) is thorough, accurate, and precise. From this vital information your long-term, customized recovery plan will be developed, with consultations between yourself and the members of your treatment team.
